‘Number Five has five fingers, Number Seven has seven musical notes, and I have nothing,' Number Nine said sadly.
‘You can count nine objects. That's more than any of us,' Number One comforted Number Nine.
‘But I have nothing to count,' Number Nine said, trying not to cry.
The sun felt sorry for Number Nine, and gave her nine sunbeams as a present. Number Nine was delighted, and she spent the whole day counting her nine rays of sun.
When evening came, Number Nine hid her sunbeams inside little amber stones, so they didn't disappear in the darkness.
The next day, Number Nine spotted a little girl crying at the side of the road. It was the girl's ninth birthday, but her parents were arguing, and it was making her cry.
‘If it's your birthday, you've got to have a present,' Number Nine said, and she gave the girl all nine of her amber stones.
The little girl ran home and said happily:
‘Mum, dad – Number Nine gave me nine
